Chapter 20: In the Rain

The detectives questioned Trevor for nine hours and let him go at dusk, and he came straight to my door.

It was raining again when Elias and I got home from the Langston building.

Trevor was kneeling on the wet marble outside our front doors.

He had no coat, and his hair was plastered flat.

The doorman stood over him with an umbrella and no idea what to do.

Two women with grocery bags had stopped on the sidewalk, and a man in the lobby had his phone up.

"Joanna," Trevor said.

He said it softly, and he did not look up.

Elias stopped beside me.

"I'll handle it," I said.

"I know you will."

He stepped back, one pace, and stayed.

I stood over Trevor in the rain.

"Get up," I said.

"I can't."

"Then say what you came to say."

His face was blotchy and wet, and I could not tell the rain from the tears.

"They're charging me," he said. "Manslaughter, and something about the lab. They say ten years."

"My father won't take my calls. The house is locked. My mother has changed her number."

"The trust is gone, Jo. The apartment. The cards. I have forty dollars."

"You had three years with Whitney and a voicemail," I said.

"I know."

"You had a bride, and a ballroom, and two hundred guests."

"I know I did."

"You left me standing at the altar in a wrecked dress."

"I've been so stupid." He dragged a hand across his face. "I loved you. I swear I did. I didn't know how to leave her."

"You didn't love me."

"I did."

"You wanted my father's forty percent, and you picked a date three weeks before my birthday."
