Chapter 24: The Ballroom of White Roses

The second dress hung on the back of the door, whole and white, and nobody had cut a single thread of it.

The woman who owned the bridal shop on Marlow Street had made it in nine days, and she had refused to let me pay.

"You're the girl who walked out of this shop with a cardboard box over your arm," she said when I fitted it. "I'm making sure you leave with something better."

Bea zipped me in, and she was crying already.

"I'm not going to say anything sappy," she said. "I'm just going to stand behind you and hold the tissues."

"You've said four sappy things."

"I've said three. One was a toast."

I laughed, and then I looked in the mirror.

The woman in it was thirty years old, with her father's chin and her shoulders back.

Pinned inside my bouquet was my father's pocket watch.

It had stopped long ago, and I had asked a jeweler not to fix it.

"Ready?" Bea asked.

"Yes."

I had thought I would be afraid.

I was only impatient.

The ballroom doors opened, and white roses climbed the walls and hung from every chandelier.

It was the same hotel and the same room.

Two hundred people stood when I came in, and this time they were not whispering.

They were smiling.

Danny's mother sat in the third row, in navy blue.

Next to her, in a camel coat and pearls, sat Trevor's mother, who had come alone.

Between them there was one empty chair.

A card on it said *Reserved*.
