Chapter 7: The Scar

"What did my father sign?" I asked Elias.

We were in the kitchen of the penthouse, and it was ten at night.

He stood at the counter with a glass of water in his right hand and his back to the city.

"Ask me something else."

"Whitney said Desmond has waited twelve years for me to turn thirty."

The glass broke in his hand.

It didn't shatter loudly.

It cracked once, and water ran over his fingers, and then the water was red.

"Elias!"

"It's nothing."

"It's your hand."

I pulled him to the sink and ran cold water over it.

The cut ran across his palm, deep at the base of his thumb.

"Sit," I said.

"Joanna..."

"Sit down, or I'll call Bea, and she'll tell everyone you passed out."

He sat on a stool.

I found the first aid kit under the sink, a neat white box that looked like no one had ever opened it.

I knelt between his knees to see the cut better.

My hands were not quite steady, and his hand was.

"This will sting," I said.

"I know."

He watched my face while I cleaned the cut.

I did not look up.

"My father was Desmond's partner," I said. "Wasn't he?"

His silence was long enough to be an answer.

"Frank Doheny started Langston and Company with Desmond," Elias said at last. "Twenty-five years ago, out of a rented garage. Desmond kept the name and the building. Your father kept forty percent."

"Forty percent of what?"

"Of everything that company is now."

I sat back on my heels.

I had spent twelve years believing my father left me a beat-up truck and a stack of unpaid bills.
