Chapter 9: Rain on the Terrace

I put the letter on the kitchen counter in front of him.

"Sixty million dollars," I said. "Eight months before the wedding."

Elias looked at it for a long time.

It was raining hard outside, and the glass wall behind him was a sheet of silver.

"Desmond gave you that."

"Is it real?"

"It's real."

"Then it's true. You wanted my father's shares before you wanted me."

"I wanted them out of Desmond's hands," he said.

"I offered sixty million to buy the trust and put it in your name on your birthday."

"He refused."

"You were going to give it to me."

"Yes."

"Without telling me why."

"Without telling you I'd stood in front of Desmond's lawyers for a year on your behalf, yes."

"I'd have told you on your birthday."

"I wanted you to have it without anyone's hand behind it."

"That's not a reason, Elias. That's a story."

"It's the truth."

"Then why did you say you learned it the year I worked for you?"

His face closed.

It was only a flicker.

"We'll talk about that," he said. "Not tonight."

I laughed, short and hard.

"Everything is not tonight with you."

I went out onto the terrace, because I couldn't stand in that kitchen one more second.

The rain hit me at once, cold and heavy.

I stood at the rail with my arms wrapped around me and my father's brass key biting into my palm.

I heard the glass door slide open behind me.

"Come inside, Joanna."

"No."

"You'll catch cold."

"I'd like to be angry first."

He came out anyway, in his shirtsleeves, and the rain soaked him in seconds.

He didn't touch me.

"I said I wouldn't touch you," he said, and his voice was rough.

"I've kept that promise for six days."

"It has been the hardest thing I've done in twenty years."

I turned around.

Water ran down his jaw and into his collar.

His gray eyes had gone almost black.

"Then break it," I said.

"Joanna."

"I want you to. I'm done waiting to be chosen. I'm choosing."

He stared at me.

I took one step across the wet stone, and I put both hands flat on his chest.
