Chapter 5: Ten Calls
The first call came eleven minutes after the Brantleys left the building.
Jack put it on speaker without being asked.
"Ms. Bannon, it's Hargrove Credit," a man said. "We've heard Dunhill has passed on the Brantley bridge. Our committee is reviewing the facility we gave them in March."
"Reviewing it how?"
"We're calling it. In full. By Friday."
"Thank you for letting me know."
The line went dead.
The second call came two minutes later, from a different bank, and said the same thing in a different voice.
By four o'clock there had been ten.
Jack kept a list on a yellow pad and crossed each name off with a short, neat line.
"That's the whole stack," he said. "Every lender they have."
"They called them because I said no?"
"They called them because everyone watched your family's biggest rescue say no. Banks don't wait to find out why."
I stood at the window of my office and looked at the street.
"Did you tell anyone the Chair's name before today?"
"No."
"Margaret said Eleanor."
"Your grandmother's name is on the lobby wall, Iris. It's on every annual report."
"I know."
"Anyone who walks into this building can read it."
"I know," I said again.
It was a good answer, and I wanted it to be enough.
He watched me for a moment and didn't push.
At seven o'clock, the front desk called up.
"Ms. Bannon, Mr. Brantley is in the lobby. He says he won't leave."
"Is he alone?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Send him up, and keep two guards at the elevator."
Carter came out of the elevator with his tie off and a day's growth of stubble.
