Chapter 8: Twenty-Five Years

At nine on Saturday morning, I stood in the front hall of the Brantley house with two movers, Jack and a list.

My things were upstairs in the room I'd slept in for exactly one hour.

Lydia had texted me at four in the morning from a number I didn't know.

Ask the housekeeper about the study. Not Margaret. Her.

That was all.

Carter's car was gone from the drive.

Margaret and Mr. Brantley were at the hospital, because his blood pressure had spiked in the middle of the gala and the paramedics had made him go.

The house was staffed, and the staff were all in the hall, because I had asked the driver to ring the kitchen bell.

Seven people stood in a loose line along the wall.

A cook, a driver, two maids, a gardener who had come in from the greenhouse with soil on his knees, a young man in a pressed vest, and the housekeeper.

She stood at the front with her hands folded over her apron.

"Mrs. Brantley isn't receiving," she said.

"I'm not here for Mrs. Brantley."

"Mr. Carter isn't home either."

"I know. I came to ask you something, in front of everyone."

She looked at the staff.

None of them looked back at her.

"Jack, would you start the movers upstairs?" I said. "Everything in the bedroom with the green curtains. Not the closet."

"Yes, Chair."

The staff looked at each other.

The young man in the vest looked at the floor to hide a smile.

I turned to the housekeeper.

"On my wedding night, you brought towels and a pitcher of water up the stairs."

"It's my job to do the evening rounds."

"You were carrying water for the guest room."

She didn't answer.

"You said, 'Here we go again.' You said they'd been like that since they were teenagers."
