Chapter 9: Boathouse
The boathouse smelled of diesel, old rope and cold lake water.
Rolf had spread a pile of orange life jackets across the floor and thrown a canvas tarp over them.
He had hung a lantern from a rafter.
Under the planks I could hear the ice ticking against the pilings.
By the door hung a nail, and on the nail hung a red lodge flannel with Devon's initials inked inside the collar.
I took it off the nail and hung it on the one beside it, out of the light.
Nobody said anything about it.
"Saturday night," Rolf said. "My night. Jesse's night. Hank put us both on the board, and I said I'd do the talking."
"Of course you did."
"I'm giving the orders." He pulled his cap off and crushed it in his hand.
"I've been rehearsing. In the shower. It's going to be great."
Jesse sat on a coil of rope with his fiddle case between his boots.
"He really did rehearse," Jesse said. "I heard him through the wall."
"Shut up, Seitz."
"Yes, sir."
Rolf took a long breath.
"Captain," he said. "Take your clothes off."
The voice that came out of him was not the one he used for jokes.
It was lower and slower, and it landed in my stomach.
I undressed, and the lantern light slid over my skin.
Both of them watched.
"Come here," Rolf said.
I stepped onto the tarp, among the life jackets.
"Kneel."
I knelt.
"Jesse. Get the tube."
"What tube?" Jesse asked.
"The one Beck gave us. In the first-aid kit."
