Chapter 15: The Porch

I met them on the porch in my apron, with flour still on my wrists.

Donal stood at the far end of the railing with his hands in his pockets, and I did not look at him.

If I looked at him, I would not be able to do it.

My father came up the steps first, in his good brown overcoat, holding his cap.

His face was grey and slack, and for a moment I forgot everything else and was sorry for him.

"Dahl," he said. "Donal told me. About Cormac."

"I know, Papa."

"I never wished him dead," he said.

"I know that too."

Behind him Ambrose came up with a bunch of white lilies wrapped in brown paper.

His eyes were red.

He had done a good job of it, and I stood and watched him do it.

"Kid," he said, and he put the lilies in my arms.

"They smell like a funeral," I said.

"I didn't think," he said, wincing, and he took them back and laid them on the rail. "Sorry. I'm no good at this."

"Sit," Peg said from the door, and set a tray of tea on the porch table with a clatter.
