Chapter 17: The Long Table

Peg set thirty places on Friday and allowed no argument.

The dining room table had never held that many.

She had the driver bring two trestle tables from the boat shed.

She covered them with sheets and told every man who touched a chair that his elbows would answer to her.

"Dahlia sits at Donal's right," she said. "Anybody who has a problem with that can eat on the porch."

Nobody had a problem.

They came in at seven in dark jackets, men I had fed for ten months and barely spoken to.

They did not sit until I sat.

I had made a stew for thirty, with a dozen loaves of Peg's bread, and she would take no credit for the stew.

"It's hers," Peg said, to the table at large. "She did the browning. I only told her when to stop."

"She told me to stop twice," I said.

"And you were wrong twice."

A big man with a grey moustache lifted his spoon.

He said, with great seriousness, that if it was wrong he would like it wrong every night.

The laugh went round the tables.

The driver, three seats down, said it was the first time he had heard that man make a joke.

The man with the moustache threw a roll at him.
