Chapter 14: The Safe

The housekeeper let us in through the kitchen and said my mother had called to say she'd be at the tower until three.

I had grown up in that house, and I had never walked through it feeling like a burglar.

My father's study was on the second floor, at the end of the hall.

It still smelled of pipe tobacco and old leather, fourteen months after anyone had smoked in it.

The safe sat behind a painting of the tower under construction.

Brice swung the painting aside on its hinge and stepped back.

"It's your door," he said. "I only carry the key."

The brass key turned with a dry little click.

The dial was another matter.

I stood there with my hand on it and tried my mother's birthday, then my father's, then the day of the wedding.

Nothing.

Then I tried my own.

The bolt slid back so easily that I laughed, and it came out wet.

Inside there was a single shelf with a single envelope on it.

BRYNN, in my father's square capitals.

Under it lay a folded page in a plastic sleeve, with a board seal at the bottom.

I sat down in his chair, with the leather cracked where his elbow had rested, and slit the envelope with his letter opener.

"Brynn,"

"If you're reading this, your mother has refused to sign something, and I was right, and I am sorry."

"I loved her for thirty-one years. She loves this company more than she loves any of us, and I think she knows it."

"I wrote the trust so she would hold your chair and not own it."

"She keeps the family chair until you are thirty, or until the owners take it from her for cause. If they do, the forty-one percent is yours that day."
