Chapter 25: The Church

On the seventeenth of October the church was full by eleven.

Two hundred and thirty people, my mother had counted, with the overflow standing along the back wall.

Cameras had been set up on tripods in the side aisle.

The bunting on the pew ends was red, white and blue.

Alvin Stehling sat in the front pew on the groom's side, in a navy suit, with his hand along the back of the bench and a half smile ready.

He had a speech in his breast pocket.

I knew, because Wendell had told me.

I came in through the side door at five to twelve in a dark green dress, the same one I had worn to the fair, with my hair in a braid and my father's watch on my wrist.

I did not wear white.

I walked up the left aisle, past the cameras.

The room went quiet.

I stopped at the altar step, where I'd stood on May ninth.

The stone was the same.

My mother sat in the front pew on the bride's side, in her brooch, with her hands pressed to her mouth.

Beside her sat a small figure in black with a cane across her knees.

Oma lifted her chin at me.

Behind her in the third row sat the old man from the Cattlemen's hall, with his hat on his knee, and the woman who owned the three-legged dog.

I looked at the back wall.

I looked at the door.
