Chapter 13: Wedding Morning

I stared at the screen until it went dark.

"You can't do that," I said.

"I just did."

"That's your tuition. That's August first."

"I'll figure out August."

"How?"

"I'll fix something for somebody rich."

He unzipped the duffel and took out his toothbrush.

I sat down on the bed because my knees made the decision for me.

"Mina's still going to read it," I said. "Her screenshot doesn't show a refund."

"Then she'll be reading out something that isn't true anymore."

He went across the hall to brush his teeth.

I changed into my sleep shirt with my back to the door, fast, and got under the quilt.

When he came back he lay down on the comforter in the same spot as last night.

I turned off the lamp.

Neither of us said anything for a long time.

I could still taste the dock on my mouth.

I could still feel his hand in my hair.

My whole body was awake and pointed at the floor.

Then I let my hand hang down over the edge of the mattress.

I didn't explain it.

After a minute his fingers found mine in the dark.

He turned my hand over and pressed his thumb into the center of my palm.

Slowly.

Like he was finding out where I lived.

I stopped breathing.

"Eli," I said.

"I know."

"Come up here."

The floor creaked.

He came up on his knees beside the bed, and his face was level with mine in the dark.
