Nobody laughed this time.
A hundred and fifty people went quiet all at once.
On the dance floor, everyone near us took a small step back.
Mina scrolled on her phone.
"Hana Kim paid Eli Novak," she read. "And the note says." She put on a high, little-girl voice. "Weekend."
Somebody at the bridesmaids' table laughed.
Then two of them did.
"I'm not angry," Mina said into the mic. "Honestly, I'm impressed. Most people just rent a tux. My sister rented a man."
More laughter, from the front.
From the back, nothing.
My father had stood up at the main table.
He was staring at me.
My mother hadn't moved at all.
"So let's give it up for Eli," Mina said. "Best performance of the weekend. He even fixed the lights."
She started clapping.
A few people clapped with her, uncertain.
Eli's hand was still on my back.
I felt it go hard and still.
He bent his head to my ear.
