He didn't look surprised.
He looked tired.
"You're not wearing shoes," he said.
"You left the binder."
"It's yours. You paid for it."
"You paid it back."
I sat down on the bench next to him.
The plastic was cold through my dress.

"Six-ten," I said, looking at his ticket.
"First one out."
"You're going to sit here for six hours?"
"I've sat in worse places."
A moth kept hitting the fluorescent light over our heads.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
"My dad's not mad at you," I said.
"Your dad's mad at somebody. I'm the easiest one."
"He's mad at me."
"Then he's wrong." He turned the ticket over again. "You did it on her wedding day because I opened my mouth at the bar."
"I did it because she picked up a microphone."

"I'm not going to let you take this one, Eli. It's mine."
He was quiet.
Somewhere down the road a truck went by with its windows open, playing country music.
