Chapter 17: Easter in Mesa
His mother opened the door before we knocked.
She was a small woman in a white Easter blouse, with gray streaking her black hair and flour on her forearms to the elbow.
She looked at me from my shoes to my face and back down to the pan of tres leches in my hands.
"You are the one who did ten," she said.
I turned my head and looked at Rudy.
He was staring at the porch light, bright red.
"Mom," he said.
"What? You told me."
"I told you one time."
"You told me three times," his mother said, and took the cake out of my hands. "Come in. Take your shoes off if you want. Nobody does."
The house was small and warm and smelled of corn husks and red chile.
There was a plastic cloth on the dining room table, yellow with lemons, and the table had been stretched with a card table at one end so that it would seat nine.
Every chair was already taken but two.
An old woman sat at the head, in a wheelchair draped with a crocheted blanket.
She was his grandmother, ninety years old, with a rosary wound through her fingers.
Her eyes went directly to my chin.
"That scar," she said in Spanish. "Where did you get it?"
