Chapter 17: A Quiet End

I took Helen to the back table by the window.

Maddox stayed at the front, on a stool by the register, with his large black coffee untouched and his eyes on us the whole time.

I had asked him to stay there.

He had asked me twice whether I was sure.

Helen sat down, folded her gloves into her bag, and slid a cream envelope across the table.

"Open it."

I did not touch it.

"Then I'll say it," she said. "It's a check for three hundred thousand dollars, Roxanne. It's yours today, in your own name, with no conditions on how it's spent."

"No conditions."

"A few small ones." She smiled kindly. "You'd move. Harlow College would take you back on your old scholarship. I called a friend there last night. You'd have a clean start, a good school and a doctor in the city who is very discreet."

I looked at her.

"A discreet doctor," I said.

"Whatever you decide about the pregnancy is your business. I would only like it to be quiet. And I'd like Chandler's name kept out of it, and out of the mouths of whoever has been telling you things about him."

"Is that all?"

"That is all. I think it's generous."

I put my hands under the table, because they had started to shake.

"You made me a plate every Sunday for five years," I said.

"I did."

"You taught me to make your gravy."

"I was fond of you. I still am." Her voice did not change. "That's why this is an offer, and not a different kind of conversation."

"What kind of conversation?"

"The kind where I call the university about your scholarship."
