Chapter 21: The Gala
Roxanne's POV
"Come to the Aldrich gala with me," Maddox had said on the phone from the airport.
That was the thing he'd needed me to say yes to before he asked.
It was number six on his list, and I said yes before he finished.
Three weeks later I stood at the top of the staircase at the Hartsdale Country Club.
My green dress was one that Teddy's sisters had picked out.
I was five months along, and the dress did not pretend otherwise.
"You look like a queen," Maddox said at my ear.
He wore a black suit that had been tailored the week before, and his scar showed white against his jaw.
"I look like a barista in a tablecloth."
"You look like mine."
We went down the stairs together.
The ballroom was full of money.
Women in silk, men in tuxedos, a string quartet under a huge glass chandelier.
The banner over the stage said: Aldrich Foundation Annual Benefit for Youth Hockey.
Heads turned as we came in.
I knew why.
The Gazette had run its apology on the front page, and everyone in this room had watched the kiss cam on their phones.
"Roxanne." Helen crossed the floor in a cream gown and put both hands over mine. "Thank you for coming. I mean that."
"Thank you for asking."
"Will you give me ten minutes at the microphone? Then I will leave you alone, if you like."
I looked at Maddox.
He shrugged, as if to say, your call.
"Ten minutes," I said.
She went up on the stage at eight.
The quartet stopped, and she tapped the microphone, and the room went quiet.
"Good evening. I have raised money for this foundation for twenty years," Helen said. "Tonight I am going to spend some of my own credibility instead."
