Chapter 6: The List
The reminder was not the only thing on his lock screen.
Under it sat a small gray square, a pinned note, with the first few lines showing.
The title was one letter.
J.
I should have walked away.
I stood in the dark kitchen in my socks, with a glass in my hand, and read it.
1. The apron string that comes untied at 5:40. I want to be the one who pulls it.
2. Her hair clip. Take it out slow. Wind my hand in what falls.
3. Make her say my name, instead of ordering a coffee. Make her say it loud.

The note ran off the end of the square.
My glass hit the counter harder than I meant.
"That's mine."
Maddox stood in the hallway, barefoot, in a gray T-shirt and sweatpants, with the blanket still hanging off one arm.
He had not been asleep.
"Maddox," I said. "What is that?"
He crossed the kitchen in three steps and took the phone off the counter.
He turned the screen off and held it against his chest.
His whole body had gone stiff.
"It's nothing."
"It has a four on it."
"It's a list."
"I can see it's a list. Who is J?"
He did not answer.
"It says Larkin's," I said. "It says five-forty. It's my apron, Maddox."
"I know what it says."
"You wrote a list about me."
"I wrote a list of things I'm never going to do." He said it low and fast. "That's the whole point of it. I don't do them. I don't say them. I don't even say them out loud, I write them down so they stay in there."
