Chapter 4: Terms
The flat on Wickenden Street had one couch, one lamp and a mattress still in its plastic wrap.
I let myself in with the key at nine that night.
Luca was in the kitchen with his back to me, making coffee at a stove with two working burners.
He had not changed out of his wedding suit trousers.
"You came," he said, without turning.
"I came because you owe me a piece of paper and my mother's house is full of her friends."
"It's in the bedroom. Third drawer."
"Not tonight," I said. "If I read it tonight, I'll believe it, because I'm tired and I want to. I'll read it when I'm not."
He turned around then.
He looked at me for a while. His eyes went to the sweatshirt, which I had not given back.
"All right," he said.
"I want to know why you're helping me."
"Because he took your father's money."
"That's not the reason."
He set down the cup.
"Three years ago I signed divorce papers inside a week, and I never asked you why you wanted them."
"I wanted them because I saw you."
"I know what you saw." His voice stayed level. "You never asked me one question, Valeria. Not that night. Not at the hospital. Not in three years."
"What was I supposed to ask? Whether it was a mistake? Whether you were sorry?"
"Anything. I'd have answered anything."
I felt my face go hot.
"You didn't get up," I said. "You lay there and you didn't say my name. I stood in that doorway for as long as it takes to breathe in and out, and you didn't move."
