Chapter 14: The Man by the Window
"Go home, Dexter," Quinton said.
"I'm trying to." Dexter smiled at the door frame. "Nobody will tell me where that is anymore."
He pushed off the wall and swayed.
Down the hall, a door opened a few inches.
A woman in a quilted robe looked out with a small dog under her arm.
She did not close the door again.
"You're making noise at six in the morning," Quinton said. "Leave."
"Ask him, Lin."
"Ask him what?" I said.
"Where he was the night we met."
My stomach dropped.
"I know where you were," I said. "You were at the gallery. You were charming and you spilled wine on my sleeve."
"I was the second man you talked to."
Quinton had gone completely still.
"Dexter," he said again, and this time it was not a warning.
It was something close to begging.
I had never heard that in his voice.
"Oh, now he wants me quiet," Dexter said. "Seven years he's had me quiet. Do you know why he can't stand to be in a room with you?"
"Because he thinks I'm a mistake," I said.
Dexter laughed.
It was a long, ugly laugh, and the woman with the dog took a step into the hall.
"A mistake," he said. "Lin. There was a man by the window at the Corwin that night. Tall. Beard. Glasses. He talked to you for an hour about a painting nobody else liked."
I opened my mouth.
I remembered the window.
I remembered the painting, a grey field under a yellow sky, and a man who had asked me what I saw in it and then actually listened.
