Chapter 18: Light the Range

By ten the next morning, Quinton's dining table was a war room.

Bree had brought her laptop and a tray of cinnamon knots.

Quinton had brought a folder of records two inches thick.

I had brought a legal pad, and I was writing in the margins.

"Here is the plan," Quinton said. "I give the toast. I show the records on the donors' screen. You stay beside Odette, and Security stays beside you."

"No."

He looked up.

"You will be in the room with Dexter and Paloma and four hundred cameras," he said. "I'd prefer you were not at the front of it."

"It's my marriage."

"It's my brother."

"It's my apartment." I tapped the pad. "My name is on the invoice. My signature is on the joint account. If you stand on that stage and tell them what he did to me, you are speaking for me again."

"Linnea."

"You want to protect me. I know." I put down the pen. "But for seven years everyone in that room has talked about me in the third person. I'd like to be there when it stops."

Bree stopped chewing.

Quinton said nothing for a time.

His ears went red, and then they did not.

"What do you need?" he said.

"Two minutes after your toast. A microphone. The screen."

"You have them."

"That easily?"

"I told you I would have asked." He closed the folder. "Ask for more."

Bree slid a cinnamon knot across the table to him.

"I want a seat at the front," she said. "And a very small hat."

We worked until the afternoon.

I wrote my two minutes on the legal pad and scratched out all but eleven lines.

Quinton read them aloud once, in a flat voice, and then he put the pad down and looked at me.
