The lender had not called to ask Dale for anything.
He had called to ask what kind of man Todd was.
"I've heard about the boosters' account," the voice on the speaker said, in the careful tones of a man who lent money for a living.
"I'm told the family is not united. I'd like to hear it from a Rieder."
Dale sat on the edge of the bed with the phone in his hand and the sheet at his waist.
He looked at me, and I nodded.
"I'm not my brother's keeper," Dale said. "But the Chamber banquet is next month. Table one is yours, I think."
"It is."
"Go," Dale said. "Sit. Listen to the speeches. Then decide."
The lender thanked him and hung up.
Dale put the phone down and stared at it.
"Did I just do that?"
"You did," I said. "You stood in front of it."
He laughed, and kissed my shoulder, and Biscuit groaned.
At five minutes to eight I was behind the desk at Hartwell Family Dental, with my hair in a clip and my cardigan buttoned wrong.
Dorothy from the choir noticed, and said nothing.
