Chapter 16: Cold Street

Audrey's POV

I had walked six blocks down Shore Road when the lights came up behind me.

Two police cars rolled up to the curb, and a third stopped across the street.

A heavy man in a captain's coat got out of the second one.

I knew his face.

He had eaten at three of Giulia's Sunday tables.

"Mrs. Penhurst," he said. "Audrey Penhurst?"

"Stansfield," I said. "My name is Stansfield."

"You're under arrest for theft of a firearm and for assault with a deadly weapon on Franklin Penhurst."

"He's lying."

"Your husband gave a statement an hour ago. He says you came at him in his own study."

An officer took my wrists, and the cuffs closed on them.

They were cold and tight.

Along the street, curtains moved in the windows.

A man walking his dog stopped to stare at me.

I stood in a thin dress on a cold sidewalk, with my hands locked behind me.

In the back of the car I stared straight ahead, trying to keep my pulse down.

At the station, they put me in a room with a metal table and a mirror.

Franklin came in ten minutes later, in a clean shirt, with his lawyer's briefcase.

He sat across from me and folded his hands.

"There's a bruise on my arm," he said. "It arrived this evening. Funny how well it photographs."

"You put it there yourself."

"Giulia's captain will say otherwise." He smiled. "Don't feel too badly, Audrey. You were always going to end up somewhere like this."
