I called the number on the letter at nine.
The chief of cardiac surgery picked up himself.
"Dr. Stansfield," he said. "I've been waiting for twelve days."
"I only got your letter this morning."
"I know. I read the news." He was quiet a moment. "I'm sorry. Can you come in today?"
"Yes."
"I have a patient who needs a valve replaced today, and a bad heart under it. I'd like it to be you."
I looked across the bedroom.
Luca sat on the edge of the bed, in his shirtsleeves, with his cane across his knees.
He had heard every word.
He nodded once.
"I'll be there at noon," I said.
Teo drove us.
He had insisted, and we let him, because he had wrapped a scarf around his ribs and said he would go out of the house on his own two feet or not at all.
Whitney sat beside him in the front seat.
She had a job now, with a legal aid office that did not ask where she had come from.
She had asked to come.
I had said yes.
At the hospital, a nurse met us at the staff door.
It was the nurse who had written me the letter four years ago.
She did not say a word.
She held my hands for a very long moment, and then she led me down the corridor.
The coat was waiting in a locker.
It was white, pressed, and new.
Over the pocket, in dark blue thread, someone had stitched *Dr. N. Stansfield*.
"Teo called ahead," the nurse said, and her voice cracked. "He sent the measurements. He said you hadn't worn one in six years."
I put it on.
