Chapter 7: The Wrong Man

The basement of the Fontana house was a wine cellar with one chair in the middle of it.

Teo sat in the chair with his hands behind him.

Two guards stood at his back, and Luca stood in front of him with a pistol held low at his thigh.

I walked down the stairs without being asked.

"Doctor, go upstairs," Luca said.

"No."

"This is family business."

"You hired me to keep you alive," I said. "A man who shoots his own cook over a bottle he hasn't looked at is a man who isn't going to live very long."

One of the guards almost laughed.

Luca's grey eyes came to me, and they were cold.

"It's a hospital vial. It was in his coat."

"Then let me look at it."

"Giulia said..."

"Giulia handed you a bottle," I said. "She didn't test it."

Nobody moved.

Teo lifted his head.

His lip was split, and he gave me a crooked look.

"Doc. You don't have to do this."

"Yes, I do."

I held out my hand.

For a long moment Luca did nothing.

Then he took the brown bottle out of his jacket and laid it in my palm.

I held it up to the bulb.

The cap was tight, the rubber still shiny from the factory, and the label was smooth and whole.

"Two things," I said. "First. The one from my husband's drawer had been opened over and over. The rubber on that cap was split, and the label was half peeled off."

"And?"

"This one has never been used. It's full to the neck."
