Chapter 32: Precious
Margaux took the key from the old woman's palm.
It was flat and brass, no longer than her finger, and it had a number stamped on the bow.
"What does it open?"
"Rue des Capucins, number nine," said the grandmother. "A ground floor and two storeys. Your grandfather's surgery."
Margaux's hand closed.
"It was sold."
"It was sold to a developer eleven years ago, and he meant to knock it down for flats." The old woman sniffed.
"I was Dr. Villard's patient for twenty years. I bought it from under him in a morning."
"And you paid too much."
"I paid far too much, and I have kept the roof on ever since."
"You never said."
"You never asked. Nor did my grandson, who thinks his grandmother is a harmless old thing."
"Grandmother," Julien said faintly.
"It was always for the doctor's heir. I did not know it would be a girl who looked so much like him." She patted Margaux's wrist. "Go and see it. Go on. Take the baby, and the boy can push me."
The guards loaded the wheelchair into the car, and it took twenty minutes to cross the city in the rain.
Number nine stood in a narrow street behind the Saint-Nizier church.
It was grey stone, with a heavy door and tall windows, and a brass plate by the bell that had gone green.
Margaux put the key in the lock.
It turned without a sound.
Inside, the hall smelled of dust and camphor and old wood, and something dry and sweet that she knew from her earliest childhood.
Dried chrysanthemum, and mugwort.
The consulting room stood at the end of the passage.
A tall cabinet of small drawers filled one wall, each with a paper label in her grandfather's careful hand.
