Chapter 7: The Pulse
The Aubrac house stood at the top of a gravel drive above the Saône, with plane trees along the wall and a gardener who looked up when her car stopped.
Julien opened the door himself.
"You drove," he said.
"I told you I would."
"You also told me nine. It is eight fifty-two."
"Then I'm early and you can stop counting."
The corner of his mouth moved.
He led her up a wide staircase to a bright room full of books, where an old woman sat in a chair by the window with a rug over her knees.
She was very small, very upright, and her hands shook on the arms of the chair.
"So this is the child," she said. "Come here. Let me see Villard's face in you."
Margaux crossed the room and knelt beside the chair.
"You have his chin," the old woman said. "He was stubborn. He once told me to my face that my husband was a fool."
"He told everyone that," Margaux said. "He was often right."
The old woman gave a bark of laughter that turned into a cough.
Julien took half a step forward, and she waved him back.
"Sit down, Julien. You hover like a nurse."
Margaux took her wrist.
The pulse was faint and uneven, and it skipped at every fourth beat.
She closed her eyes for a moment and listened with her fingers, the way her grandfather had taught her, and the old woman went quiet.
"The heart is tired but it's not finished," Margaux said. "I'll use three points on each arm and one at the ankle. It won't hurt. It will feel heavy."
