Chapter 23: Twenty-Three Oh One

The bank vault was cold and smelled of metal.

The agent set a long steel box on the table and stepped back.

"Your certificate is on top," she said. "Take your time with the rest."

I lifted the lid.

My marriage certificate lay flat in a plastic sleeve, with Brent's careful block print across the back of the envelope.

DO NOT REMOVE FROM BANK.

Under it was a small velvet bag, dark green, with gold initials stitched in the corner.

They were my mother's.

My hands knew them before I did.

I loosened the drawstring and tipped the bag into my palm.

A plain gold ring rolled out, with a small diamond that had been set too low.

My mother had worn it every day for twenty-six years.

After she died, I kept it in my jewelry box, and in my first year of marriage it vanished.

I had blamed myself for seven years.

I had blamed the movers, and the cleaners, and my own grief.

A paper tag hung from it on a loop of string. The print on the tag was square.

L's mother. Appraised $38,000. Sell after closing.

I did not cry.

I stood there holding it, and the old fury went through me, clean and quiet.

"The appraisal is dated in your first year," the agent said gently. "He told you it was lost."

"He helped me look for it," I said. "He crawled under the bed."

Nobody in the vault spoke.

I put my mother's ring on my right hand.

It fit.

Then I took the other ring out of my jacket pocket, the nicked gold band with L.S. to B.P. engraved inside, and put it on the steel table.

"For the evidence file," I said.
