Chapter 19: Half the Proof
Rocco grabbed the edge of the round table, and his knuckles went white.
"Rocco," I said.
"It's nothing."
"Sit down."
"I said it's nothing."
"Sit down now."
He sat.
I took his wrist, and under my fingers his pulse hit three beats, skipped one, hit two and skipped again.
The same wrong rhythm I had found at the gate.
"Look at me," I said.
"Ada, I'm fine."
"You're a man who's been shot at, who's seen his sister tied to a chair, and whose heart has been poisoned for four months. Look at me."
He looked.
His lips had gone gray at the edges.
I put my other hand flat on his chest and made him breathe with me, in through the nose and out through the mouth, until the count under my palm slowed.
"Again," I said.
He did it again.
The skipping came less often, and then not at all.
"There," I said.
Gia knelt beside the chair and took his other hand.
"You scared me," she said.
"I scared myself."
"That's the poison leaving your system." I kept my fingers on his wrist. "It leaves slowly. Stress brings it back for an hour. It isn't new damage, and it will pass."
"Will it ever stop?"
"If nobody feeds it to you again, in three months it will."
He closed his eyes and leaned his head back.
"Then I have three months to be careful," he said.
"You have a lifetime to be careful," Gia said. "Start by not walking into a restaurant with a hole in the plan."
She stood and wiped her face with her sleeve, because she was crying and hated it.
Her phone buzzed.
She read the screen and went very still.
"It's the pharmacist," she said. "The lab called her."
"What lab?"
"The one in Manhattan. They always keep half." She looked up. "They kept half of Papa's hair. They kept the whole report."
