Chapter 8: The Dress

Rocco walked down the cemetery road without hurrying.

"I came to see my father," he told his brother.

Tullio looked past him at the open iron door and the car and me in the back seat.

"At dawn," he said. "With Gia and Carson Rensselaer's wife."

"At dawn," Rocco said. "When I couldn't sleep."

Tullio studied him a moment longer.

Then he laughed, softly, and shook his head, and the whole thing turned into a family joke.

"You and your ghosts," he said. "Come to dinner Saturday. The heads of the other four families are coming, and I want them to see you well. You've scared them all."

"I'll be there," Rocco said.

"Bring Mrs. Rensselaer, if you like. Carson and his friend are coming too. The firm's guests."

"His friend," I said through the car window.

"Miss Corley," Tullio said pleasantly. "His associate."

He rolled up his window and drove away.

Gia gripped the wheel.

"He knew exactly where we were," she said.

"He's family," Rocco said. "He follows me."

He got into the front seat and said nothing else.

On Saturday, Gia dressed me herself.

She pulled a dark green dress out of her own closet, took the hem up with six pins and stood back with her glasses in her hand.

"It's mine from ten years ago," she said. "I was thinner then. It'll do."

"It's beautiful."

"It's a dress." She looked at me in the mirror. "You've got his men running errands for you. His sister is hemming your clothes. Don't get comfortable."

"I never do."

"Good," Gia said. "Then you'll live."
