Chapter 19: The Offer

Gordon Collier made his offer on Monday morning, in the Thackeray boardroom.

Nine directors sat at the table, with a plate of sliced fruit between them.

I sat at the middle with my back straight and my hands folded.

My grandmother sat at the far end with her cane across her knees, saying nothing, which she does better than anyone alive.

Ansel was on the bench in the hall outside, with the old bag between his feet.

He had promised not to come in, and he had promised to stay in the building.

Gordon stood, buttoned his jacket, and smiled at all of us.

"A modest proposal," he said. "The Collier Foundation unfreezes the Fourth Street clinic today."

"For ten years, at the full thirty-one thousand a month. No review, no board."

A director nodded, and another reached for a strawberry.

"In return, Leona assigns me her proxy vote on the Thackeray board," Gordon said. "That's all."

"No," I said.

"I haven't finished."

"You asked, and I answered," I said.

I had heard those words in my grandmother's study with a click in my chest.

They sounded different from this side of the table.

Gordon waited a beat, and then he adjusted his cuff.

"Naturally, we'd name the new wing for your husband," he said. "The Merrow Pavilion."

"There's no new wing."

"There will be, with a plaque. Ansel would never have to ask for anything again."
