Chapter 11: The Elevator

On Monday the court called all of us back for a conference about the accounting.

It was short.

Clark testified that he would produce every statement. Anthony Crane stood and agreed to all of it, in the flat voice that made everything he said sound like the only reasonable option.

He did not look at me once.

I watched him the entire time.

At the end I packed my folder and walked out into the corridor, and he fell into step beside me without a word.

Neither of us spoke until the elevator doors opened.

It was full.

A bailiff with a banana. Two clerks, a woman with a stroller, an old man in a jury badge, and a young man in a good suit holding a clear plastic bag with a live goldfish in it.

"It's a court exhibit," the young man said to no one.

We squeezed in.

I ended up against the back wall with Anthony beside me, close enough that his sleeve pressed my arm from shoulder to wrist.

The doors shut.

"I read the Whitlow file," I said, very low.

Nothing in his face moved.

His hand tightened around the handle of his briefcase until the knuckles went white.

I told myself it was the weight of the case.

"Where did you get it?" he asked.

"My husband. He copied it from her purse."

"Then it is not hearsay."

"Don't do that."

"Do what?"

"Turn it into a question about evidence." I kept my eyes on the numbers over the door. "You told me to ask her what her name was three years ago. You wanted me to find it. Who is Anthony Whitlow?"

"A man who failed to appear."

"That's not an answer."
