Chapter 16: Term One

Meredith's POV

I rode up to the fourteenth floor with a copy of my motion in my bag, and Bree rode down in the other car.

We passed each other in the lobby.

She wore a cream coat and her best, calmest face.

"Mer," she said sweetly. "Give your grandmother my love."

"I'll give her your address."

Her smile did not move.

I was still shaking when I knocked on the glass door of Anthony's office.

He opened it himself.

His tie was off and his sleeves were rolled, and on the desk behind him lay a cashier's check beside a leather folder.

"What did she want?" I asked.

Term two. Same day.

He told me at once, in about five sentences, and he did not leave out the number.

"Two hundred thousand," I said. "She's paying you with my money."

"Yes."

"Did you take it?"

"I put it in the envelope for the district attorney."

I looked at the check for a while.

Then I looked at him, standing there with his scarred forearm bare, and every sensible thing I had planned to say went out of my head.

"Term one," I said.

"I am aware."

"Nothing until they're finished."

"Yes."

"Tell me to leave."

He looked at my mouth.

"I live five floors up," Anthony said, very low. "I would like to say that I'll be a gentleman about it."

"Don't be."

I did not remember the elevator.

I remember the key in his hand, and the door slamming, and my back flat against it.

He held my face and kissed me slowly, and I hated it, because I wanted it fast.

I pulled his shirt out of his belt.

He undid my jacket and let it drop.

He opened the buttons of my blouse one at a time, and his mouth followed each one down my throat.
