Chapter 24: The Seat at the Table
On the first Monday of December a man on a stepladder lettered my name on a glass door.
It was the door of the corner office on the twenty-second floor of Calder & Finch.
It had been Howard's before he moved down the hall to the smaller one with the better light.
The letters were gold leaf, and the man took his time over each one.
I stood in the corridor with my coffee and watched the *L* come up.
*MEREDITH A. LANG, PARTNER.*
"You're hovering," Howard said behind me.
"I'm supervising."
"You are standing in a hall grinning at a door."
"It's the coffee."
He came and stood beside me, his hands in the pockets of his gray cardigan.
"The district attorney's office called," he said. "Ms. Rowan has taken the plea."
I did not turn.
"How long?"
"Eight years, upstate. Restitution on every account, the Larchmont money, the business she took, the rest. The Audi goes to auction." He cleared his throat. "She asked for you."
"What did she want?"
"I said you were busy."
"Thank you."
"I deleted the message," Howard said. "Unread."
I laughed so hard the man on the ladder looked down.
Clark had pleaded on the notary charge and lost his license for five years.
He sent me one letter, from a town in Ohio, that said only that he was working in a hardware store and was sorry.
I wrote *received* on the envelope and put it in the drawer where I keep the things I am not going to answer.
