Chapter 14: The Widow Speaks
Carter stared at the screen.
"How does she know?"
"You kept her on your location sharing," Soren said.
"It was a joke. A little heart on the map."
Soren took the phone, turned it off and set it in the freezer, under the ice trays.
I stopped my recording, and the red dot went out.
I emailed the file to Rosalyn and to myself and to a third address Soren made me type twice.
"Sleep on the couch," I told Carter. "Soren sits in the chair."
"Annika, thank you."
"I'm not doing this for you."
I went upstairs and lay on top of the quilt, and I didn't sleep.
At six, Soren knocked and said, "Come see."
The television in his living room was already on.
Carter sat on the couch in yesterday's wet shirt, white to the lips.
On the screen, my sister stood on the courthouse steps in a black dress.
A grey-suited lawyer stood at her shoulder, and eight microphones were pointed at her face.
