Chapter 12: Hal's Garage

Ryan's POV

Hal Brewer lived at the end of a gravel road with a detached garage he'd spent twenty years turning into a shop.

I drove there at four in the afternoon, with my phone recording in my shirt pocket and my gun locked in the glove box.

I didn't want to be tempted.

He was bent over a workbench sanding a chair leg when I walked in.

"Ryan." He straightened and wiped his hands on a rag. "Didn't expect you. How's the family?"

"Don't."

He saw my face and put the rag down.

"Don't what?"

"I heard Gwen at lunch," I said. "I know about the report in your safe. I know what she took from it."

His eyes went to the door behind me.

Then he nodded slowly.

"Shut that," he said. "Shut it, and sit."

"I'll stand."

"Suit yourself." He leaned on the bench. "So she told you."

"You gave her the real file."

"I did not give her anything." His voice cracked. "She broke into my house in February. She went through my safe while I was at my sister's. She walked out with it and called me from the car, and she said, Hal, I know what you two did to my brother."

"And you went to work for her."

"I went to work for my pension, and for you." He jabbed a finger at me. "She said, tell me where Ryan is and what he's doing, and the file goes back in the drawer. That's all. A text here and there."

"A text about my wife."

"I didn't know what she wanted it for!"
