Chapter 7: Left Hand

I took him out of the church by the side door with half the pews calling after us.

Skye went ahead and had the Subaru running at the curb.

Nobody spoke until we were on the lake road.

"She knows something about that card," Skye said, watching him in the rearview mirror.

"It's a trick."

"A good one, then."

He sat in the back with his cap in his lap and his eyes on the water.

At the lake house I told Skye to go home and sleep, and she gave me a look that said she would be back in two hours whether I wanted her or not.

The door shut behind her.

The house went quiet.

"What did he write on it?" he asked from the window.

"You tell me."

"I can't." He turned around. "I'm not going to guess in front of you, Marlo. I'd rather you hate me for not knowing than believe me for a lucky answer."

I thought about that.

"The hospital took a lot of things," he said. "Some of it is gone. I don't know which parts yet."

I wanted that to be true.

I also wanted to run a bath and cry in it.

"Sit," I said. "Give me your hand."

He didn't move.

"The one you keep wrapped."

"It's ugly."

"I have seen the rest of you. Sit down."

He sat on the edge of the kitchen chair.

I got the first aid kit from under the sink and pulled a stool up in front of him.

His right hand lay on his knee.

I took it in both of mine and began to unwind the gauze.

The skin underneath had healed a long time ago.

It was shiny and pink-white, drawn tight across the knuckles and the back of the palm.
