My Husband Kept Sending Packages to Ex, So I Filed for Divorce novel · Chapter 12 of 24

Chapter 12: Suspended

The depot manager's office is a closet with a window onto the dock.

He shut the door and sat down without offering me the other chair.

"Shana Yost," he said.

"She's been arrested."

"She's out on bond. Since Wednesday." He opened the folder. "She filed this with the carrier Saturday. She says you've been stealing packages off her mat for a year."

I laughed.

He didn't.

"She lists thirty-two items," he said. "Boots, perfume, a scarf, a stand mixer, a set of china. She says she never got them. She says you kept them, and then you made up the binder to cover it."

"She sold every one of those on a live sale. There's video. There's a hundred people at the market who watched her."

"She says those were different boots."

"Then where'd she get them?"

He rubbed his face.

"Becca, I've known you six years. I know who you are."

"Then tear it up."

"I can't." He slid a sheet of paper across the desk. "Any theft complaint against a driver, the carrier takes you off the road till there's a review. That's the rule. It isn't mine."

I read it.

Suspended from driving, pending review.

"When's the review?"

"Two weeks. January eleventh."

"Two weeks," I said. "I just bought this route. I owe Norma thirty-eight thousand dollars by April. And I'm supposed to sit in a garage for two weeks while she tells people I'm a thief?"

"You'll still get paid. Partner's draw."

"That's not the point."

"I know it isn't." He held out his hand. "I need your scanner."

I unclipped it from my hip.

I'd worn it every working day for six years.
