Mitch and I both grabbed for the key at the same time.

Our hands landed on it together, his on top of mine.

Neither of us let go.

"Look at that," Norma said. "Partners."

"I'm going to be there at four," Mitch said.

"I'm going to be there at three-thirty."

"Then I'll sleep in it."

"You already sleep in it."

Norma took her cribbage board down off the shelf.

"You two can share a key or I can take it to Florida and drive it on the beach," she said. "Somebody deal."

The next morning I pulled into the lot at three-twenty-five.

Mitch's truck was already parked beside van 22 with the engine running.

He was asleep in the cab with his mouth open and his grandfather's thermos in his lap.

I let myself into van 22 with my key, turned on the heated seat, and honked the horn right next to his window.

He hit his head on the roof of the truck.

It was the best morning of my life so far.

My name came back in April.

The judge had signed it into the decree, but paper is just paper.

It didn't feel real until I got my new license in the mail at Norma's.
