Chapter 12: Seven Forty-One
On Wednesday afternoon the team was on a road trip.
Fox Field was empty except for the sprinklers and one mower, far out in left field.
Dani had her badge back, and she'd gone straight up to the booth to look at it.
I came after school, still in my work cardigan, and found her sitting at the console with Todd's card propped against a monitor.
"Seven forty-two," she said, without turning around. "That's the slot after the kiss cam, between the fifth and the sixth."
"I know."
"Promotions approved it Tuesday afternoon. An intern. He told her he wanted to make a message to his wife." She tapped the card. "Twenty seconds on the board and a live mic from section 112."
"Can you pull it?"
"In four keystrokes."
"Don't."
Dani swung her chair around.
The sun through the glass lit her up from behind, and the pencil in her hair stuck out sideways.
"He'll stand up in front of five thousand people and cry, Dolan. He's very good at it."
"I know he is."
"Then why?"
"Because I want to go first."
She waited.
"I want fifteen seconds, at seven forty-one," I said. "On the board. One minute before his."
"For what?"
"You know for what."
Dani turned back to the console and stared at the dead screens.
"No."
"Judd."
"I don't want an apology on a screen." Her voice was low and shaky. "I don't want you to do it, and I don't want to run it. You'll cry, and I'll have to watch, and my headset will be on."
"You put the truth on a screen for me."
