Chapter 6: Soup for the Suspended
The knock came at noon, and it was a lot of people knocking at once.
"If that's another casserole," Dani called, "I'm calling the police."
She opened the door, and the landing was full.
The man from the tunnel stood in front, holding a cooler by both handles.
Behind him were a kid in a Foxes cap and a broad woman with a sunburned nose.
Behind them stood a gray-haired woman in a lanyard, and I knew her voice from the booth speaker.
"Chili," said the man from the tunnel.
"It's ninety-four degrees," Dani said.
"It's the only thing the roller driver makes." He carried the cooler past her and set it on the kitchen counter. "He made it for you at six this morning. He cried a little."
"I'm not dead, Russ."
"You're suspended," Russ said. "Same casserole."
So that was his name.
They came in one at a time and found places to stand.
The kid took the armchair and the woman with the sunburn took the arm of the couch.
The woman in the lanyard walked straight up to Dani and hugged her so hard that both of them swayed.
"That was the cleanest cam I have ever shot," she said into Dani's shoulder.
"I know. You said. Eleven times."
"I'm saying it twelve."
Nobody had ever shown up at my door.
I stood at the edge of Dani's kitchen with my arms crossed and felt like a person who had wandered into somebody else's wedding.
The woman with the sunburn pulled an envelope out of her back pocket and held it out.
It was a Ziploc bag with two hundred and twelve dollars in it, mostly ones.
