Chapter 18: The Login

Colby was sitting on the white rug in 3B with his back against the gray couch and a cardboard box beside him.

The box held a stapler, a mug with the flooring company's logo, and a framed photo of our wedding.

Someone had packed it for him fast.

"Don't," he said, before I'd shut the door. "I know what I look like."

"You look fired."

"Nine-fifteen. HR walked me to the lobby." He laughed, and it cracked in the middle. "The vice president said the clip made the company look unserious."

The Practice frame lay face down on the floor in front of him, with its back off.

In the matte, near the top edge, was a hole no bigger than a pencil point.

Behind it, taped into the cardboard, sat a lens the size of a lentil.

"It's mine," Colby said. "I bought it. Last summer, when she said she wanted a security thing for the plants." He turned his phone over in his hand. "The app's on my account. She never asked me for the password. She just thought I wouldn't look."

"You looked."

"At six this morning. I thought I'd watch one clip." He rubbed his face. "It's saved forty days."

He held the phone out.

I didn't take it yet.

"Tell me what's on it," I said.

"Things." He swallowed. "She walks around in here talking to herself. Did you know that? She practices. She stood right there and did the pregnancy announcement a dozen times."

I could picture it, and I hated that I could.
