Chapter 20: Second Intermission

On Saturday I bought my own ticket.

It was in the upper bowl, row six, section 224, in the very last block the box office had left.

Bridget bought the other seven.

"I called everyone who owes me a favor," she said, tugging down a Falcons hat over her pink streak. "Fortunately they are all drunks."

The six regulars from the Corner Tap filed into our row in blue jerseys, carrying pretzels.

The oldest, a man in a flat cap, sat on my left and handed me a pair of binoculars.

"For the details," he said.

I looked down at the ice.

Under the lights the whole arena glittered, blue towels already on every seat, the screen over center ice running a loop of sponsor logos.

I found Colby in the lower bowl in his gray hoodie, alone in the seat next to an empty one.

He was looking at his hands.

At the top of the stairs, an usher in a red vest stopped at our row and looked directly at me.

It was the same usher from the south corridor, the one who had come to find me for Rhys.

"Ma'am," she said, quietly. "I was told to look for you."

"I know."

"I was told to walk you out if I found you."

"I know."

She looked down the row at the old man in the flat cap, and Bridget, and four large men in jerseys, all staring at her with great calm.

"I'm going to take my time looking," she said, and walked off in the other direction.

Bridget shook her head with a grin.

"I love her," she whispered.

The game was a blur.

I watched the numbers on the scoreboard and could not have told you who was winning.
