Chapter 11: The Lobby

The lobby of the Bellhaven Harbor Hotel was bright and loud at one in the morning.

Thirty or forty travelers stood around their luggage with wet coats and paper cups, watching the front desk.

Neil stood at the counter with his arm around Candace.

He had on the pale blue suit from the television show, and she was in a gray cardigan with her hair half down.

"I'm a paying guest," Neil was saying, in a voice meant to carry. "I've been a paying guest for four months, and your staff moved my wife out of her room in the middle of the night."

"She's not your wife," a woman by the elevators muttered.

Neil didn't turn.

"I want Suite 612 reopened, and I want an apology."

Abram walked across the marble floor with his hands at his sides.

I followed a few steps behind and stopped near the revolving door.

"Mr. Wexford," Abram said. "Good evening."

"Frayne. Good, you're here."

"Your account was closed tonight. The card on file was cancelled by its owner last week, and I held the suite as a courtesy until I closed it."

"It's my suite."

"It was your wife's company's suite." Abram kept his tone even. "Ms. Rudd has a room on the second floor at no charge for as long as she needs it. You're welcome to sit with her in the lounge. You're not welcome to make a scene in my lobby."

Candace pulled at Neil's sleeve. "Neil, please. I'm tired."

"In a minute."

"I want to lie down."

"I said in a minute, Candace."

She flinched, and the whole lobby saw it.

I stepped forward. "Neil."

He swung around, and his face went through three expressions before it settled on contempt.

"There she is. Taking a victory lap in front of strangers."
