Chapter 18: What Candace Owes

Joanna's POV

On Saturday morning a truck I didn't know stopped at the end of our driveway.

I was at the kitchen window in my robe with a mug of tea.

Candace got out of the passenger side by herself.

She wore a plain grey coat that didn't close over her stomach, and she carried a manila envelope in both hands.

Her husband stayed in the driver's seat with his hands on the wheel.

He raised one of them to me, and I raised mine back.

I opened the door before she knocked.

"I'm not coming in," she said. "I only want to say this on the step."

"Then say it."

"I brought the account." She held out the envelope. "It's everything in C. Rudd Consulting. Forty-eight thousand, three hundred dollars, and the statements, and a signed letter for your lawyer."

"What does the letter say?"

"That Neil came up with the coaching packages. That he wrote every pitch and told me to hold the money." She swallowed. "And that I did, and I knew it wasn't right, and I kept the notes in my handwriting anyway."

I took the envelope.

It was heavier than paper should be.

"The bank has already been told to release it to you," she said. "My husband made the call himself yesterday. He sat beside me while I did it."

"And the salary?"

"I resigned by email last night. I'm not asking for the last month, and I'm returning the car keys to the hotel."

"You'll need money for the baby."

"We'll manage." She almost smiled. "He's good with wood. He's already building a crib."
