Chapter 23: On the Porch

Neil stood up when he saw me.

He didn't come down the steps, and he didn't smile.

"I won't stay long," he said. "I'd like five minutes, and then I'll go."

I looked at the white envelope.

"What's in it?"

"The deed. I've signed my half of the house over to you and Miles." He held it out and I didn't take it, so he set it on the porch rail. "And a letter to the company's bank, saying I never had any claim on it. My lawyer drew them up this afternoon."

"You have a lawyer again?"

"A cheap one." He almost laughed. "I sold the car."

I sat on the top step, because my legs wanted me to, and he sat on the bottom one with his back half-turned.

We looked at the dark street.

"Go ahead," I said.

"I rehearsed this. I rehearsed it for two weeks at a motel." He rubbed his hands on his knees. "Then I threw it away, because every version had a reason in it."

"Then just say it."

"I lied to you for four months." He said it to the street. "I put her in a suite on your card. I called it a client residence. I let Abram's staff stock the minibar."

He took a breath.

"The worst part wasn't the money or the television. I told our son you were fragile so he'd keep my secret. I bought his silence with a phone."

I didn't move.

"I stood in the wings while you walked out to two hundred people, and I thought, she'll smile. She always does. She'll do the hour." His voice wobbled and came back. "And I didn't care if it cost you your name, because I was the one who'd said I built it."
