Chapter 27: New Year
Silvio stared at his mother across the bolted tables.
"Ma. Stay out of it."
"I stayed out of it for twenty years," Ottavia said. "Look where it got you."
She folded my paper into her pocketbook and snapped it shut.
Then she looked at me.
"Go home, Mirella. Eat something. Leave my son to me."
The guard called time.
I walked out to the bus without looking back, and that was the last I heard of it for two days.
On the thirtieth, Delfina called me at seven in the morning, screaming.
I held the phone a foot from my ear.
"They dropped it! All of it! The whole case came out of that rotten deputy's tip, so the judge threw it in the garbage!" She was crying. "He's coming home tomorrow. For New Year's. Mirella, he's coming home."
He came home on the thirty-first at noon, in the same cardigan he'd been arrested in.
The twins hit him at the front door.
He picked them both up and stood in the hall holding them with his eyes shut.
Then he put them down and saw me in the kitchen doorway.
He walked over, took my face in his big hands, and kissed my forehead once.
"Thank you," he said.
It was the most he'd ever said to me in one breath.
Delfina cooked for two days to make up for it.
Lentils for money. Sausage for luck. Fried smelts because her husband liked them and nobody else did.
The wife from the docks brought her husband. The young wife brought her twins and her sister from the night shift.
The old concrete wife sat at the head of the table in the place of honor, because Delfina said so.
At eight o'clock Delfina's husband looked across the lentils at Aaron.
"You," he said. "The tall one. You're the fed."
The table went quiet.
"Accountant," Aaron said.
"That's worse," said Delfina's son, and the whole table laughed.
