My Husband Left Me Dying for Her. I Made Him Regret It novel · Chapter 31 of 32

Chapter 31: City Hall

I looked at the box for a long time.

The baby made a small wet noise against his neck and went back to sleep.

"Open it," Aaron said. "I can't. My hands are full of your daughter."

I opened it.

There was a ring inside. A plain gold band, thin, with one small stone set flush so it wouldn't catch on anything.

Folded under it was a paper napkin from the diner on 86th Street.

I knew it by the revolving cake case printed in the corner.

I unfolded it.

His handwriting. Straight lines.

"One," I read out loud. "I never cook again."

"That's for everybody's safety."

"Two. She gets my jokes and your books."

"Fair split."

"Three." My voice went. I read it anyway. "Nobody in this house ever signs anything for twenty-four hours."

He stopped walking.

"I don't have a list," he said. "I'm not a CPA. I just have that."

I put the napkin down on the table next to the burned toast.

I took the ring out of the box and put it on my own finger, because his hands were full.

It fit.

"Yes," I said. "In writing. Yes."

He kissed me over the top of the baby's head, and she woke up and screamed at both of us.

We got married at city hall on a Friday in June.

Not the night clerk. The day one, at noon, in the line with everybody else.

Delfina and her husband stood up as our witnesses.

Her husband wore a suit for the first time since a funeral. Delfina wore leopard, which she said was a neutral.

The wife from the docks came, and the young wife with her twins and her sister from the night shift.

The old concrete wife came on her cane and told the clerk to hurry up, she was eighty.

Delfina's son held the baby in a sling on his chest, very seriously.
