Chapter 10: Two Lines

Emmeline's POV

Bridget texted me a dozen times in two days before I answered.

The last one said: I'm at the apartment on Wren Street. I'm not going to hurt you. I just need someone to hear it.

I left my daughter with Hazel and went, because I wanted to hear it too.

The apartment was on the second floor of a brick building behind the Harbor Inn.

The door was unlocked.

Inside there was a couch, a good lamp, and a closet half full of Brennan's shirts.

I knew every one of them. I had ironed them.

Bridget sat on the floor with her back against the couch and a mug of tea gone cold in her hand.

She had no makeup on. Her hair was in a knot.

She looked up at me and did not try to smile.

"You came," she said.

"Say it."

"My parents won't speak to me. Alastair's family sent back the shower gifts. Brennan's gone, I don't know where. I've been in this room for three days, Emmeline."

"I'm not here to feel sorry for you."

"I know."

She pressed the heels of her hands to her eyes, then took them away.

"I'm pregnant."

I did not move.

"Nine weeks now. I took the test two days before the wedding."

She wiped her face with her wrist.

"I thought it was a sign. I thought he'd see it and everything would settle."

"Whose is it?"

"You know whose."

My daughter was two weeks old.

She would have a half sibling, and Brennan would hold that baby too, with the same easy smile.

I sat down on the edge of the couch, because my legs wanted me to.
