Chapter 18: Why February
"I was afraid you'd ask me to leave," Alastair said, "and I'd have to."
I stayed where I was, with my cheek on his chest, and let him go on.
"I stood in the Harbor Inn parking lot in February and I knew I had to tell you."
"And?"
"I drove to your street, and I sat outside your house for an hour."
"I never saw your car."
"I parked at the corner. You came out onto the porch in a yellow sweater and watered a dead plant."
"The fern."
"The fern." His chest moved under my face, almost a laugh. "You looked so happy that I couldn't do it."
"You thought it would be kind to wait."
"No. I thought, if I tell her, she'll look at me and see the man who brought this to her door. And she'll ask me to leave. And I'll have to."
His voice was steady.
"I wanted one more week of being a man you hadn't blamed yet. Then I wanted another. That's the whole reason. It was selfish, and it was weak."
I lay still.
I had expected something grander. A plan, a principle.
It was just a man in a car at the corner, wanting a week.
"That's the first thing you've told me about that spring that I believe," I said.
"I know."
"It's still not enough."
"I know that too."
I sat up and pulled the sheet over my chest.
"Ninety people on your sales floor heard you admit you wanted me. Two hundred and eleven watched Brennan get arrested. And the three hundred at the church? Most of them think you were the sad groom."
